The Omed-Omedan Ceremony, also known as the “Kissing Tradition,” is a unique and lively ritual celebrated by the youth of Banjar Kaja in Sesetan, Denpasar, Bali. Held annually on the day after Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, this tradition symbolizes togetherness, harmony, and the spirit of renewal.
Key Highlights:
- Participants: Unmarried young men and women from the village, aged 17-30, gather to take part in the ceremony.
- The Ritual: Participants are divided into two groups (male and female) and face each other in a playful tug-of-war-like setup. Amid cheers, laughter, and traditional music, they are encouraged to embrace and kiss while being doused with water by the crowd.
- Cultural Significance: The ceremony is believed to foster community bonds, bring good fortune, and ward off negative energies. It is also rooted in a local legend that highlights the importance of unity.
